Taking responsibility for human development and global solidarity

The coronavirus pandemic is a systemic human development crisis, affecting individuals and societies in unprecedented ways. It is also generating new humanitarian needs.

The International Rescue Committee said last week that the virus could cause 1bn infections and 3. According to World Food Programme estimatesthe number suffering from hunger could rise from million to more than million.

The International Labour Organization reported last week that almost 1. COVID has underscored the importance of humanitarian leadership and global solidarity. Solidarity is a matter of both morality and long-term vision. Failure to pass this test would leave deep psychological wounds in left-behind countries, paving the way for all manner of extremism and new crises—from pandemics to conflicts—that would threaten everyone. By rallying around science and solidarity today, we will sow the seeds for greater unity tomorrow.

The coronavirus does not respect borders. Nor does it discriminate. It brings into stark view the imperative for humanitarian leadership.

This crisis has revealed variations in state capacity to contain the spread of the virus. Many governments either lack adequate capacity to respond, or in some cases, the necessary political will to provide for their citizens. For example, the most developed countries — those in the very high human development category — have on average 55 hospital beds, over 30 physicians, and 81 nurses per 10, people, compared to 7 hospital beds, 2.

One can readily imagine that if the COVID response has been dire in the developed countries, it is going to be infinitely more devastating for governments that have only a fraction of the financial and medical resources. Despite the blockade, the State of Qatar stands out as one of the most actively involved in global humanitarian responses to the COVID pandemic. Qatar has provided significant humanitarian aid to 20 countries so far, including assistance in the field of medical supplies, building field hospitals, and contributing USD million to multilateral organizations working to develop vaccines or ensure the resilience of healthcare in other countries.

In the age of COVID, protecting the most vulnerable among us is not just a moral imperative but also an urgent public health objective. The health of one is the health of all. To successfully avert the crisis, Mr. Mohammed, as UN agencies have worked together with external partners, including through the Global Education Coalition, to deploy support and guidance to Governments. Central to transforming words into action, Ms. Mohammed highlighted the priority areas of financing, inclusion, teachers, safe school reopening, connectivity and coordination.

Turning to the Sustainable Development Agenda, Ms. Overall, progress continues to fall far short of what Member States committed themselves to, at the Fourth World Conference on Women. To effectively measure progress in that regard, reliable, timely and disaggregated, data are critically needed and closing data gaps requires regular collection and use of gender statistics.

With less internet access, particularly in developing regions, women also face difficulties maintaining valuable personal connections and carrying on day-to-day activities during lockdowns. Liu stated.

Moreover, he pointed out that women face reduced access to sexual and reproductive health services; and need more time to care for the elderly, sick and children, including home-based education; adding that they are also at higher risk of infection than men in the workplace.A total of 28 businesses, including some of the top employers in Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam, have committed to championing gender equality It has been a decade since the Magna Carta of Women was passed, which presented the perfect opportunity for the Philippine Commission on The Philippines, according to recent reports, has roughly half the number of researchers it needs.

It is, above all, a call to focus on people — women, youth, low-wage workers, small and medium enterprises, the informal sector and on vulnerable groups who are already at risk.

Whole societies must come together. Every country must step up with public, private and civic sectors collaborating from the outset. But on their own, national-level actions will not match the global scale and complexity of the crisis. The first step is to mount the most robust and cooperative health response the world has ever seen.

Health system spending must be scaled up right away to meet urgent needs and the surge in demand for tests, expanded treatment facilities, adequate medical supplies and more health care workers; and for health system preparedness and response in countries where the virus has not yet manifested or where there is no community transmission to date. The strongest support must be provided to the multilateral effort to suppress transmission and stop the pandemic, led by the World Health Organization WHOwhose appeals must be fully met.

Scientific collaboration in the search for a vaccine and effective therapeutics must be promoted through initiatives such as the WHOsponsored solidarity trials. Universal access to vaccines and treatment must be assured, with full respect for human rights, gender equality and without stigma.

That means the direct provision of resources to support workers and households, provision of health and unemployment insurance, scale-up of social protection, and support to businesses to prevent bankruptcies and massive job losses. That also means designing fiscal and monetary responses to ensure that the burden does not fall on those countries who can least bear it.

A large-scale, coordinated and comprehensive multilateral response amounting to at least 10 per cent of global GDP is needed now more than ever. This crisis is truly global. The third step is to learn from this crisis and build back better. Had we been further advanced in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, we could better face this challenge — with stronger health systems, fewer people living in extreme poverty, less gender inequality, a healthier natural environment, and more resilient societies.

We must seize the opportunity of this crisis to strengthen our commitment to implement the Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. By making progress on our global roadmap for a more inclusive and sustainable future, we can better respond to future crises.

The recommendations in this report are geared to empower governments and propel partners to act urgently. The United Nations family — and our global network of regional, sub-regional and country offices working for peace, human rights, sustainable development and humanitarian action, will support all governments, working with our partners, to ensure first and foremost that lives are saved, livelihoods are restored, and that the global economy and the people we serve emerge stronger from this crisis.

In the face of such an unprecedented situation in recent history, the creativity of the response must match the unique nature of the crisis — and the magnitude of the response must match its scale. No country will be able to exit this crisis alone.

We are members of a universal Church that transcends national boundaries and calls us to live in solidarity and justice with the peoples of the world. We are also citizens of a powerful democracy with enormous influence beyond our borders. As Catholics and Americans we are uniquely called to global solidarity.

In many ways our community of faith practices solidarity every day. Missionaries preach the Gospel and celebrate the eucharist. Catholic relief workers feed the hungry and promote development. The United States Catholic Conference and other Catholic groups defend human life and human rights, promote global justice, and pursue peace.

However, these international institutions, programs, and collections have not yet awakened a true sense of solidarity among many Catholics in the United States. The international commitment of the Church in the United States is not all it can and should be. Our parishes often act as islands of local religious activity rather than as parts of the mystical body of Christ. At the parish level, where the Church lives, we need to integrate more fully the international dimensions of Catholic discipleship within a truly universal Church.

The coming jubilee offers U. The demands of solidarity require not another program, but greater awareness and integration into the ongoing life of the parish. An important role for the parish is to challenge and encourage every believer to greater global solidarity. These reflections are intended for pastors, parish leaders, and other involved Catholics.

They address the Catholic call to global solidarity in two distinct but related ways. One is the individual responsibility of every Catholic founded in our baptism and expressed in our everyday choices and actions.

Another is the essential role of the parish as the spiritual home and religious resource for the Christian faithful, both sacramental and educational, and as a place for common prayer and action in pursuit of global solidarity. A few years ago we developed and adopted Communities of Salt and Lighta modest reflection on the social mission of the parish.

We would like to build on the remarkable response to this document and encourage parishes to strengthen ties of solidarity with all the peoples of the world, especially the poor and persecuted. We also wish to provide a framework for parish leaders looking to strengthen or initiate programs of international solidarity. For Catholics in the United States, the call to international solidarity takes on special urgency.

Yet all around us are signs of suffering and need:.

Perhaps spring 2018 will see the introduction of an iPad Mini Pro with upgraded components, a new thinner, tougher aluminium chassis, and the inclusion of a Smart Connector to match that of the other iPad Pro devices.

Like iOS 12 - and Apple's other major OS updates - watchOS 5 will first be unveiled in the summer of 2018, before a public launch in autumn. Unlike the others, however, watchOS 5 probably won't be made available in the form of a public beta. We suspect that this may be the first watchOS update that won't be able to run on every Apple Watch model, after seeing our first-gen Apple Watch struggle with the watchOS 4 update in 2017.

Following its usual pattern, Apple will reveal and demo macOS 10. The last and least heralded of Apple's OSes, tvOS is nevertheless a Pretty Big Deal for everyone with a fourth-gen or 4K Apple TV. But we've since been informed that it won't make its debut until 2018. Designed in response to the likes of Google Home and Amazon Echo, HomePod is a smart speaker that also sounds brilliant. Apple focused more on sound quality than its smart features in the unveiling of the HomePod, which is an interesting take on things but perhaps we'll discover more about Siri's role in the new device as we approach its release date.

Discover more about the HomePod here. Brand new to the Mac line-up is the iMac Pro, which Apple unveiled at WWDC 2017. It isn't out yet, but Apple still maintains that it will be launched before the end of 2017. The stunning new device is the most powerful Mac ever made, and it's still a sleek all-in-one like the iMacs we know. This time, though, Apple has opted for the Space Grey colouring, complete with a new Space Grey keyboard, mouse and trackpad.

The specs on the iMac Pro are incredible, particularly if you opt for a built-to-order model. Those working with 3D and VR, for example. But more than that, this iMac offers a machine that is going to be powerful enough for whatever is next.

You can find out more about what to expect from the iMac Pro here. The Mac Pro is long overdue a refresh, as it hasn't been updated since the launch of the 'trashcan' Pro model in 2013. The once-futuristic device now looks a little long in the tooth, having been bypassed by generations of Intel chips that never made it into the chassis. In April 2017 Apple broke its silence and discussed the Pro's future with a small group of journalists, first apologising for the lack of updates and then acknowledging that the trashcan design didn't work out the way it had hoped.

And so the machine ended up being very difficult to upgrade.

The mystery device, of course, caused huge stirs in the Apple community. However, while we'd all hoped it'd be a cool new Apple device, further investigation seems to suggest that it's nothing more than a badge reader that attaches to a door assembly, most likely for use in Apple Park.

There's a snap of the wireless device above, but those that want more information can check out the full FCC filing here. Apple has got quite a lot money, and armchair pundits love to spend the company's money for it. From time to time these suggestion-cum-predictions come true, as with Apple's acqusition of Beats in 2014, but it hardly needs stating that the company isn't in a hurry to divest itself of that cash cushion.
